Bleeding Nipples??? No One Told Me About That!

220 Lbs - RHR 74bpm - Ran 5 kms yesterday in 35 Minutes (two walk breaks)

Good Grief! I was soliciting sponsors yesterday and my neighbor Elise was telling me that she ran a half marathon last year and she proceeded to tell me all the "secrets" that I needed to know. One included making sure that I had the right type of wicking running singlet and that I used "BodyGlide" or Petroleum Jelly on my nipples so that the chafing from the shirt doesn't cause my nipples to bleed. She says it happens a lot to the men who run marathons.

What the heck did I get myself into???????????????????????

Well I had to take a couple of walk breaks yesterday (probably a little cheating cause I ran alone). The best song was Detroit Rock City by Kiss.

My ankles are a bit sore as are the muscles in my calves/shins. I iced them and put them up while I caught the new series Traveler. Might just be the new Jericho (I still feel betrayed that they cancelled that show).

This weekend I am putting in a personal appearance at a Retirement Residence in Etobicoke for the Arthritis Society. Jeez - if I am going to be the poster boy/male model for Arthritis how come it can't be with Canada's Next Top Model?

Tonight I Rode the Bike! - Weight Same - RHR ??

I decided to ride the bike tonight and give my knees, ankles, shins, calves, thighs, buttocks and arches a break. Well, sort of, I biked about 13 Kms and was pretty aggressive but it helped to keep the blood moving and I will run tomorrow I guess.

Dan went off to see the Blue Jays play. Hrmph - HE can afford it!

No word from Craig & Ainsley. Have they dropped out???

I Ran with Dan - 224lbs RHR- 66bpm

One quick thought that I forgot yesterday. My favorite song on the Sunday run was White Rabbit by the Blue Man Group. (An excellent version of the old Jefferson Airplane song).

I didn't plan on running yesterday but Dan Good called and asked if I wanted to run. Dan is a new grad from Western's Kenesieology program and is a personal trainer (Man talk about lucky - I get to work with two personal trainers!). Dan is the son of one of my oldest friends. Luckily they just happen to live one street away from us so it works out well.

Dan is interested in doing the Greek Marathon for Joints in Motion as well so I have sent him the papers and he was going to call the Arthritis Society and sign up.

We ran approximately 4.5 kms in about 29 minutes (translation - real slow jog) but I finished it with only one 30 second walk about 1/2 way through. Today I will DEFINITELY take a rest day and maybe just ride my bike.

Here is some info about the Greek Marathon from the official site.

"The Hellenic Amateur Athletics Federation (SEGAS) celebrates the 25th anniversary of the ATHENS CLASSIC MARATHON, organized in the memory of the Balkan Champion Grigoris Lambrakis, and invites all enthusiasts of sports and of the values that this Race represents, to participate in this historic event, which is being held on the authentic “original course”, starting from Marathon and finishing in the Panathinaikon Stadium.

The Athens Classic Marathon is a competition event, which comprehends important symbolisms on world peace and the power of human will, promoting at the same time the spirit of emulation, and sports as a way of living and thinking. This year’s event, organized under the sponsorship of ALPHA BANK for the 7th consecutive year, meets all the high standards set by IAAM and AIMS, as well as those of other similar races held abroad. The organization of the “authentic” Athens Marathon goes beyond the idea of a simple sport competition and it is being transmuted into a big international sport and cultural celebration of the city, in which all citizens contribute, in their own way, in making it an unforgettable experience for all participants.

The event of the Athens Classic Marathon, apart from the race held on the original Marathon course, which - starting from this year - could even be walked if someone prefers to do so, includes two more road races of 10km and 5km, addressed to those who wish to experience the joy of participation and finishing in the Panathinaikon Stadium (Kallimarmaro).

The 10km Road Race is being held on the last part of the Marathon course, while the 5km Road Race will be held, for the first time this year, in the Athens historical center, passing along Acropolis and other significant city monuments and buildings.

The Athens Classic Marathon Organizing Committee invites you all to participate in one of the road races that are part of this event, follow the footsteps of the legendary messenger of Ancient Athens, of the Olympic Champion Spyros Louis, of the Balkan Champion Grigoris Lambrakis, and become yourself part of history!"

The Day After - 223 Lbs -

Woke up yesterday AM and found that I was two lbs lighter. Not because of one run. There must be another cause.

Did not run in the AM. Instead I went golfing with a number of guys that I went to high school with. All were very supportive and I raised a few hundred dollars in sponsorships. The golf sucked (partly because I am not a good golfer) mostly because it poured rain when we got to the 13th Tee.

I came home and after dinner ran another 5 kms. Not as hard on my ankles and thighs as the day before was.

Today I expect to do a spin class or some other cardio and give my bones a day off. My donation site is up and running. It can be accessed from

Pretty cool eh?

A Good Start - 225 Pounds - Resting Pulse 68

I must be nuts!

Somewhere along the line, at 51 (OK and 1/2) I decided that I should run a marathon. Hmmm, just another item on my list of 100 things to do before I die.

My wife Lori thinks that it may wind up killing me. I think that she secretly roots for it as long as the insurance is paid up. Well actually she has been very supportive. I also have the support of my family. My nephew, Craig and his girlfriend Ainsley tell me that they are going to sign up and run the marathon with me. We just need to work out the plan.

I am running this marathon for the Arthritis Society's Joints in Motion program. My minimum contribution to this marathon is $5,500 so I have to fundraise like crazy.

I ran this AM for the first time. I thought I was in pretty good shape. Step Aerobics and Spin Classes 1-2 times per week were keeping me in prime cardio fitness territory. Not really. I made it about 2.5 kms today. I plan to increase that but this is going to be tough.
